Runes began as a Scandinavian runic alphabet, with each rune having its own name and symbolic meaning. 

There are several variants of the runic alphabet. The rune set uses the oldest, called Elder Futhark, which consists of 24 runic symbols.

Each rune represents a word or a phrase signifying concepts important to the early peoples who used them. Each rune has a story associated with it, as well as an associated Norse god.

Besides their linguistic uses, the Vikings believed that runes possessed magical powers, so they incorporated them into their mystical and religious practices, such as divination. 

Rune stones would be cast out or thrown, then the patterns and symbols interpreted - much like the practice of reading tarot cards or other forms of fortune-telling. 

FUN FACT  The Bluetooth symbol is actually formed by the overlapping of two Viking runic symbols. The technology is named after Harald Bluetooth, the Viking king who united Denmark and Norway in the 10th century.
